German Appetizers

If somebody prepares a meal, there are mostly some appetizers involved. For sure there are some which are mostly taken as a kind of desserts. Especially sweet liqueurs are most used as dessert sometimes also liqueurs of herbs. Such Geman appetizers can be bought in every supermarket or some special kind from producers and in differens specialised stores and online shops.

A very common liqueur, which is used as appetizer is for example “Kümmerling”, a liqueur of herbs. But also it is very usual to take a simple “Korn” or “Doppelkorn” as an appetizer of a meal. For dessert there are mostly grogs with fruits used like “Kirschwasser” or “Birnenschnaps”. Traditional quality and receipes of appetizers in Germany are mostly developed in former days by nuns and monkhood in the abbeys. But also some of them were developed by normal people and passed down from one generation to the next. Unfortunately many of those old receipes got lost by the time so that some people decided to research these old receipes and to try to prepare a “remake”.

Liqueurs and Grogs

One can buy them on different small markets but also in special stores and sometimes even in online shops. But it is quite difficult to get such specialities in an online shop. Most of the producer make these liqueurs and grogs as a hobby and do not have the time or the chance to sell them in a commercial way on their own. The best way to get such special appetizers is a trip through some smaller villages.

There are often markets or small backyard – shops who are offering some home made liqueurs and sometimes also grogs. They are very good souvenirs and presents as well. As they are home made, most of these traditional German liqueurs are very rare and not easy to get. So if somebody has the chance to buy some, they are worthy to try.
