German Cookies There are many reasons, that German cookies are known and liked all over the world. One of those is their uniqueness. German cookies are not only made up of ingredients which guarantee a very good quality, but also with very old recipes which have been perfected in family-owned businesses for generations. So there are sometimes cookies and cakes, that are unique to the respective company like for example the very famous shortbread made by Leibniz Bahlsen. Another reason is the variety and so the cookie assortments range from simple shortbread and whole-grain cookies to crisp wafer creations up to cookies filled or glazed with chocolate.
But in difference to many American cookies or British biscuits German cookies are often a little less sweet and while American cookies usually are formed with two spoons, the dough of German cookies gets rolled out in the majority of cases. Another very famous kind of German cookies are the seasonal baked goods for Christmas like the so called “Stollen” or gingerbread. German Gingerbread German gingerbread, that is available in many stores and thanks to the internet in online shops for costumers all over the world, is a richly-spiced cookie that is composed of ingredients like honey, flour, sugar, eggs, different kinds of nuts or marzipan and refined with spices like cinnamon, ginger, anise or cloves. Germany belongs to the countries with the longest gingerbread tradition and so it is not hardly surprising that there are many kinds and shapes of gingerbread to choose from. But besides that the typical gingerbread spices are not only used in gingerbread with or without wafer but also in many other Christmas creations like for example in sugar-glazed gingerbread cookies, the so called “Pfeffernüsse“, or in chocolate-coated gingerbread cubes filled with jelly and marzipan, the so called “Dominosteine“.
