German Food Recipes

The German food recipes differ between regional dishes, traditional dishes and dishes influenced by the cooking styles of European neighbours such as France, Italy, Austria or Switzerland. Some ingredients like sausage, that is mostly consumed as a snack, the so called German Bratwurst, at barbecues or in soups and other dishes or potatoes prepared in many different kinds such as mashed or fried appear in many German food recipes. But the German cooking can not be reduced to just a few ingredients.

Usually a typical German dish contains a type of meat, a type of potatoes, rice or noodles and a type of vegetable. Typically used meat is pork, beef or poultry, in some regions and having regard to the seasons also wild and fish. The potatoes are served as dumplings, just boiled in salted water, mashed or fried. But rice or different kinds of noodles are very popular accompaniments, too. Typically used vegetables are different kinds of lettuce, carrots, cabbage, beets, field garlic or celery.

German cookery

A component of many German dishes is sauce and Germans are all known all over the world for this affectation. So there are many different sorts of sauces such as gravy or a sauce made with pepper, mushrooms, cheese or onions. Two very important spices in the German cookery are horseradish and mild, hot or middle-strength mustard. By using German food recipes, which are available in books, stores and often in online shops, too, one should bear in mind, that the measurements are noted in litres, grams and kilograms, and sometimes in cups, too.

Measurements like pints are not used! And when it comes to production of cakes and biscuits one should remember that the German ovens work with degree Celsius.
