German Snacks

Besides typical snacks like chocolate bars and other candies, salty snacks like potato chips or pretzels, people in Germany like to snack on more healthy products, that include fruits or nuts or dairy products such as quark snacks or yoghurt. In contrast to North America, where quark is usually hardly available, in Germany quark belongs to the very popular dairy products, that can be bought in almost every store.

Quark is made up of curdled milk and is comparable with the Italian ricotta. The assortment of this popular dairy product includes a plain version, that is mostly used for baking and cooking, a version with herbs and spices to use as bread topping or with potatoes and with different fruit flavours to be eaten as a healthy, filling snack.

Beside quark Germans like to snack on puddings, rice puddings and different kinds of yoghurt, plain and together with vegetable sticks or with fruit flavours. Other very popular snacks are salty pretzel sticks and peanut flips. But contrary to their name the essential element of peanut flips is corn flour. Similar to the North American trail mix German like to snack on the so called “Studentenfutter”, what literally means student feed and which is available in stores and also in online shops.

German Sandwiches

This classic snacking mix consists of dried fruit like raisins and different kinds of unsalted nuts such as peanuts, walnuts, hazelnuts, pecans, cashews or pine nuts. “Studentenfutter” owes its name to the healthy mix of valuable and important nutrients and is particularly loved by those who think or go in for sports. But it goes without saying that Germans love snacks like sandwiches, the in Germany so called “belegte Brötchen” or a piece of cake while their lunch break, too!
