Popular German Food

While talking about popular German food many might think about dishes such as bratwurst, pickled cabbage, pan fried potatoes or the Viennese Schnitzel. But the German cooking offers much more than that! There are hundreds of typical dishes which differ from region to region. While the people in the northern part of Germany love food like “Labskaus” or “Aalsuppe“, Germans living in the middle prefer for example the so called “Frankfurter Grüne Sauce” served with potatoes.

Typical dishes in the southern part of Germany are “Spätzle” or lifer loaf with mild mustard. “Labskaus” is a typical dish for those living near to the coast and is made up of a hash of meat, fish, onions, potatoes, beets and topped with a fried egg. The famous “Aalsuppe” is a sweet-sour soup made with mixed vegetable, herbs, small flour dumplings and sometimes fruit, but must not necessarily include eel as would be conjecturable because of its name. The “Frankfurter Grüne Sauce” is a cold served sauce that owes its name to the seven different herbs that are mixed for. “Spätzle” are small hand-made noodles scraped from a wooden board directly into boiling water.

German Restaurants

These noodles are served as accompaniment or as main course together with bacon, onions and cheese or with lentils. Not to forget are the German Desserts, including many versions of cakes, biscuits and tarts or the variety of German bread. But all of these are just a few examples of the popular German food. Many of those can be bought and tried in German restaurants as well as in shops and stores all over the country.

Besides that many of the needed ingredients and recipes can be ordered in online shops by customers all over the world.
